Lost a Link You Copied? How to Find It Again
Try pasting first: it may still be on your clipboard. Then check clipboard history (Win V on Windows, ⌘ Space then ⌘ 4 on macOS 26), then your browser history. To never lose one again, use a clipboard manager.
You copied a link, then copied something else, and now the link is gone. Work through these steps in order.
1. Paste it somewhere
If you haven't copied anything since, the link is still on your clipboard. Click into a notes app or your browser's address bar and press Ctrl V (Windows) or ⌘ V (Mac).
2. Check your clipboard history
- Windows 10 and 11: press Win V. This only works if clipboard history was already on, and it's cleared when you restart.
- Mac on macOS 26 Tahoe: press ⌘ Space, then ⌘ 4 to see recent clipboard items.
- Older Macs: there's no built-in history, so skip to the next step.
3. Search your browser history
If you opened the link at any point, your browser remembers it:
- Chrome and Edge: press Ctrl H (Windows) or ⌘ Y (Mac).
- Safari: press ⌘ Y.
- Firefox: press Ctrl H or ⌘ Shift H.
Search for a word you remember from the page, or the site name, like "docs.google" or "youtube".
4. Go back to where you found it
Links usually come from somewhere: a WhatsApp chat, an email, a Slack or Teams message, a document. Most of these have search, so look for the sender or a word near the link.
5. Make sure it never happens again
A clipboard manager saves every link you copy, so "copy" effectively becomes "save". With Clippy (free for Mac and Windows):
- Copy links like you always do.
- When you need one, press ⌥ ⌘ V on Mac or Alt Shift V on Windows.
- Search, click, and paste.
Star the links you reuse, like meeting rooms and forms, and tag them by project or subject.
